In 2021, I have found myself moving more people than I ever thought I would.  But the market is simply too good not to move in the midwest.  So I thought I would share some tips and tricks to having a good moving day.  Because lifting heavy furniture, carrying it through tight doorways, and being exhausted at the end of a long day all plague your mind. It’s a draining task, for sure. But what a lot of people fail to keep in mind is having the appropriate gear for moving. Do you have a trailer for all of your furniture, appliances, and items? Just a truck bed? What about dollies? There are so many small things that you can use to change the whole experience from hard to easy. 

Once you stop getting cheap moving boxes and get some good ones you can then get some awesome items to change your whole experience. What may slip your mind, however, are items that can help secure and protect your belongings. Those things are ratchet straps and furniture blankets.  Do not forget to bring these and even ask all your family members to help pitch in.  Save some money and ask for help if you need to. But it is worth asking.  Boxes and furniture shifts during a move. It’s the nature of driving your things to a new location. Getting straps can be a game-changer.

.If you are able to find or borrow some straps, or cargo straps, there is simply a massive list of pros when it comes to why you should use them. Because they’re available in a range of weight capacities, come with different kinds of hooks, are lighter than the chain, and won’t scratch finished items like all of your wood furniture the way chain can, they’re versatile, extremely useful, and simply a must-have for your next trip.  Cargo straps most often come with some sort of ratchet that enables you to easily secure your furniture tightly. Make sure to get a blanket for moving as well. More like twenty of them. A blanket’s primary purpose is to save your furniture from rubbing up against other pieces of furniture. This protects your items from rips, tears, scratches, and other marks you wouldn’t want. Typically, you would want to place the blankets between each piece of furniture in your trailer. That’s a lot of blankets, however, so some pieces of furniture need it less than others. This can save so much heartache and cost.

Get towels if you must but blankets double as moving equipment in that you can drag things along floors!  The next time you plan to move or help move someone in, invest in a few furniture blankets and cargo straps. These tips can save money, and sentimental value of things getting crushed as well. 

Moving is simply a part of life.  Since most people move 5 times it is good to learn to do it well.  I am at 12 times in my life and I am relatively young.  It is 2021 and houses started selling around our neighborhood like hotcakes.  The ability to sell was in a day and the interest rates to get a new house was several percent lower than what we are currently at.  This means that we were able to sell and move to a much better house in a nicer location for the same price.  The thought of this was perfect and we made it happen.  Because of the amazing market, we decided to crack-on and move as well.

Learning to move is a good thing, but this time things seemed to be a little bit more complicated.  Local lockdowns in 2021 had made renting cars a nightmare and the cleaning routine that had to be done at the end seemed insane.  They wanted pictures of trailers being scrubbed and cleaned and I was simply not going to do it.  I called up some friends and found a trailer that we were going to be able to use.  Then after a week, I found a truck that could haul it and a driver willing to help.  It really is nice when friends help out and it is something that you need to do in return.  I always provide gas money and food with lots of beverages.  It is a great way to keep morale up.  One lesson to learn was the usage of cheap moving boxes and how much of a pain it was. 

Now we were on the ball and were ready to go a week ahead of the move.  This made things easier on our anxiety and simply our work schedule.  Since we have moved many times our garage was filled with cheap moving boxes.  We used these for years and thought that one more time wouldn’t hurt and it was a big mistake.

It took time and money to tape them all backup. I noticed that they were looking old and getting flimsy.  It ended up that my initial thought of just going to get a moving package of boxes was right.  These were bad and I was simply being cheap.  Wellbeing cheap ended up costing me lots of money in the long run and I regret it.  The boxes started to tear and I would simply add more tape.  We packed up our dishes and clothes and honestly these boxes smelled too which was just not fun.  We had to wash it all again.

A few of the boxes even imploded.  From moving from the house to the trailer and to the new home three boxes exploded.  The items in them were thrown on the ground and we lost a whole box of dishes.  That was hundreds of dollars of dishes and time wasted.  It was all my fault. The carrier of the box did nothing wrong and the worst part was they got hurt.  We had cuts from glass and one guy pulled a muscle.  It was not worth the cost of using old boxes.  I will never use old packages again and will spend 30 bucks to live happily. 

One thing that I have always wanted to do in my lifetime is start my own business. For a long time, I had one particular aspiration to open and own my own coffee shop some day. It didn’t have to be anything super large or grand and spectacular; rather, a quaint little cafe in some downtown area would be more than enough for me. I am super passionate about everything related to coffee, and I think that owning a coffee shop would be such a nice way to spend my later years in life. My original plan was to wait until my retirement age to start this adventure, but with the way our country is headed (and how bad Social Security is becoming), it might be the case that I am not able to retire until I am well into my 70s. That being said, it might make sense to start my own business a little bit earlier. I don’t know much about starting a business, but I have plenty of experience working in one. I don’t think that it would be that hard to start a business, especially now with all the resources available to the little guys like myself. What resources am I talking about? Well, let me tell you about this little thing called eCommerce.

eCommerce has only started to become popular in the last decade or so. Obviously, the age of technology that we are in has brought on a lot of changes to our world. From better quality of life, to new forms of travel, to increased and more efficient communication, you could say that our world has been completely changed by a variety of technological advances in the last 50 years or so. That being said, the business world has also changed a lot when it comes to the addition of technology. eCommerce is one of the bigger changes in most markets that have occurred. Nowadays, people don’t have to waste their time looking around at a bunch of different stores to try to find the things that they want.

I don’t need to rely on my local Walmart to carry the specific consumer goods that I am searching for. Rather, I can search around online for whatever I need and have things shipped to my door in cardboard boxes or poly bags. The world of eCommerce has seriously changed the game. With the addition of an internet focused on consumerism, it can be said that prices have never been so competitive. I mean, no longer does a small business have to compete with just the other businesses in close physical proximity; now, every small business has to compete with the entire online world and all that can be found in it.

Personally, I have thought about ditching my cafe dream in exchange for some of the lucrative business of an eCommerce store; however, I do not have a huge desire to sell coffee stuffed into poly bags to people I’ve never met across the country. The whole idea of eCommerce is an interesting one, but it is not something that I can see myself doing in the long run. It takes out a bit of the shine and the concept of my business approach, and I think that what I am looking forward to more than anything is simply owning my own physical business like a cafe. Having a place where I can serve people coffee and be in relationship with people around me is priceless, no matter how lucrative the eCommerce business may seem right now.

The onest of the COVID19 pandemic has brought on a lot of problems for our country. If you wanted to look at just one thing that’s going wrong, of course your mind would drift to our economic recession and downturn that has come from so much lost business. However, there are so many other factors at play that it is hard to determine any sort of cause and effect relationships that could be going on. Not only that, but it is a real issue in the United States when you look at our political scene and all the things that have gone wrong due to COVID. In the past year, we have seen a great deal of division, political unrest, and socioeconomic problems that have been associated with a whole host of politicians, government officials, and political parties.

As for me, I am less focused on those issues when looking at COVID. Instead, I tend to be more focused on the business side of things.Looking at things from a purely business focused perspective, it is clear that there have been a lot of changes that have occurred due to the pandemic. I mean, right off the bat, it is so crazy to see how many people are now working from home. Personally, I never would have thought that I would find myself working from home for months on end, with no particular end in sight. Depending on who you ask, it was the worst or possibly the best thing that could have happened to them. Some people who are more introverted prefer to spend more time at home working, and have absolutely loved the stay at home orders. Extroverts like myself and have found it much more difficult to acclimate to the hermit lifestyle, and have really begun to resent the stay at home order.

Regardless of what you feel about any of those issues, it can be said that we are experiencing some real labor shortages in our country. More specifically, the industrial and manufacturing industries are having some real problems filling their shifts and keeping their product moving. I have a lot of friends in those industries who can’t seem to keep enough people in their inventory, and it seems like less and less people are willing to work lately. In factories, people are leaving in droves, looking for work that doesn’t involve poly bags. Personally, I have never spent an extended amount of time putting things in poly bags to be shipped out to consumers, but it doesn’t sound like such a bad gig to me. In my opinion, the most important thing to keep in mind is that this will eventually all pass. If you look back into the history of our nation, and even the history of the world for that matter, certain events that transpire will always become part of history again and the experiences won’t last forever. 

I mena, you can already tell that things in our country are starting to change back to some sense of normalcy again, and we are only about halfway through the year 2021. There is some conflict about how much change is good, as COVID is still definitely an issue in certain places. However, with the vaccine becoming extremely available to pretty much everyone in America, it makes sense that things are trying to become more normal again.

Each and every year I end up going hunting.  Being apart of hunting in the midwest is like riding a roller coaster.  The weather could be warm one year and the arctic cold the next.  Yes, we have been colder than the arctic on many occasions and at the same time.  Normally, it doesn’t matter much to me but this year was much warmer in the winter than normal.  This was supposed to be amazing and for a little bit of the time, it was.  This is because I love hunting, but my entire life I have always hunted in the bitter cold for deer.  So this year it was warmer than any other and for the first time, I was able to hunt in relatively warm weather. My winter clothing actually kept me warm.  It was such a cool experience.  On my second day, I ended up getting a deer.  I was all alone and it was one of the craziest experiences in my life.  Now to my own surprise and circumstances moving boxes were the heroes of the day. 

I got stuck without my own vehicle this year because it was in the shop. This meant that I was lucky enough to be able to borrow my father’s truck just in case I actually got a deer.  So finally day two into my super warm and happy hunt I was able to get a massive buck.  It was 30 pounds heavier than the biggest deer I have ever gotten. I knew I was going to eat for a super long time and my family was going to be able to eat meat for free for months. This is a huge motivation. 

My location was a large farm field.  It was also hundreds of yards deep into the woods. Now, normally I hunt in the woods and am able to get my deer and drag it to the field.  Then I usually drive across the field and load up the deer.  Well, this year I have my father’s truck which is brand new and didn’t have a liner in it yet.  It was not mine so I planned to treat it way better than anything I own.  That is just plain manners.

I was lucky enough to be successful and it was shot a long way back in the woods.  So I had to field dress and drag the deer hundreds of yards to the edge of the field.  I ended up taking 1 hour to drag it that far to the field.  Then I ended up getting it to the field but the field is so muddy and filled with clay that there is no way a truck can get through.  It turns out that I was going to have to pull the several hundred-pound deer across a whole field of clay.  I started and tried to do it but I was failing. This pushed my body to the limit.  Finally, I went back to the truck to see if something could help.  Luckily my father had just helped my brother move and a beautiful amount of cheap moving boxes were in the back. Guess what I made a sled.  I was able to also protect the bed of the truck from any mess, mud, and blood with the packages too. 

Don’t fall into the old wives’ tales of moving.  There is nothing worse than living in 1970 without all the benefits.  Instead, use your head and your ability to get vehicles for cheap and to move locations happily and without pain.  This year has left me with a bad taste for moving.  But that is not because I don’t enjoy the entire process it is simply because I have had to move four separate families and my also my own. This was awful on my weekends, but really a nice thing for people to do because of the money we all saved.  This is because the economy is really perfect for buying and selling homes right now.  Prices are high but the interest rates are the lowest they have ever been.  Thanks 2021, you finally did something right.  Instead of all the lies on COVID-19 we got cheap houses on top of it. But the fact is that all my family and friends decided to do basically what I did and move.  So this means that I have learned a good amount about moving and how you do it really matters. Don’t be cheap.  Trucks suck for moving. There is no other truth than this.  The family we moved simply asked everyone who had a truck to help them.  I have to say this is not the worst idea, but it certainly was not the best.  It is simply more dangerous and complicated to move when you are lifting each item four feet up in the air in order to get it on the moving vehicle.  So each cheap moving box and each piece of furniture has to lift high.  That means all the heavy pieces are at risk and they are putting more people at risk as well.  A two hundred pound dresser is really hard to put in a truck bed and not have any damage occur to the item, the truck, and the people moving.  We had many injuries and scuff marks and even some dents on that move and it made me learn some valuable lessons and that is to find an easier way to move heavy items. 

We evolved and finally another family member purchased a big Uhaul truck for the day.  This was a better improvement.  It had lots of space and instead of lifting an item very high into a truck bed we only had to walk up a steep ramp with the heavy items.  This led to less damage to the items themselves but it did trip up a few people and some muscles were pulled. So all in all this method was not the worst but the steep angles involved meant some injuries did happen.  I was still left with a longing to find the best and most simple way to move large items.  But I must say this way protected all the items from the weather elements and that is definitely a good reason to use the method of moving. 

If the weather allows, skip all the crap and get a nice open-walled trailer.  This is the answer to the easiest moving. Make sure it has a ramp that is easy to walk up and to pull a hand cart up.  This makes moving the best.
